Mahjong Tower

Mahjong Tower is mahjong solitaire with a tall, narrow stack. More layers means fewer free tiles at a time, so every move matters more than in the classic turtle.

How to play Mahjong Tower

  • A tile is free when nothing sits on top of it and its left or right side is open.
  • Click two identical free tiles to remove them.
  • Clear the tower completely to win.
  • Every deal is generated to be solvable, and Hint, Shuffle and Undo are always available.

Tips that actually help

  • Work the top layers off first — a tile under three layers is dead weight.
  • Prefer the pair that frees the most new tiles, not the first pair you see.
  • Undo is free: use it to test whether a move opens up the board.

What makes the tower different

The classic turtle layout spreads wide, so there are almost always plenty of free tiles. A tower stacks the same 144-tile rules into a narrow, tall shape. Fewer tiles sit on the outside edge, which means fewer free tiles at any moment and a lot more planning.

Who it suits

If the turtle layout feels too easy, the tower is the natural next step. It uses exactly the same rules — nothing new to learn — but punishes careless matching much faster.

One engine, three shapes

The turtle, tower and pyramid layouts on this site all run on the same engine with the same tile set. Switch between them from the buttons above the board without losing your place.

Frequently asked questions

Is every tower deal solvable?

Yes. Deals are generated by pairing tiles along a valid removal order, so a winning sequence always exists.

How many tiles are in the tower?

The tower layout uses 76 tiles — fewer than the classic 144, which is what makes it feel tighter.
